Gillingham Fact File
The town name 'Gillingham' is recorded in the eleventh century Domesday book and is thought to be named after a 'Gyllingas' a warlord. This is taken from Old English 'gyllan', meaning 'to shout'
The parish church at Gillingham was rebuilt by Bishop Odo of Bayeux around the time of the Norman Conquest along with an Archbishop's Palace on the land which borders today's Grange Road
Constructed in the 12th century, 'The Church on the Green' is the oldest building in Gillingham, formerly known as St. Mary Magdalene Church
